After School: Adventures in Peacemaking

What is Adventures in Peacemaking?

In today’s afterschool programs, educators face the challenge of expanding academic enrichment opportunities for students while enhancing academics with creative programming that fosters social and emotional development. ESR understands that educators want to design afterschool programs that complement the school day and combine academic preparation with opportunities for healthy play and the creative arts.

We know that afterschool needs to feel different from school. So we designed Adventures in Peacemaking (AIP), an activity-based educational program that can be quickly and easily introduced into any afterschool program. With AIP, you’ll learn the skills you need to develop afterschool programs that address the needs of the whole child.

How can AIP support my afterschool program?

Since 1995, AIP has been making a difference in more than 750 early childhood and afterschool settings across the country. The program was designed by ESR and Project Adventure—widely recognized for their leadership in adventure-based education. Together, we refined AIP’s strategies to ensure flexibility in serving an increasingly diverse audience and to better connect AIP to your school’s learning standards. The result is an array of creative activities that promote safe and vibrant afterschool programs that welcome all children, value active learning, and encourage caring and respect.

ESR knows that children learn best from doing, exploring, and playing in a supportive environment. We also know that developing balanced afterschool programming is time consuming. So we’ve made it easy. With the AIP program, you can tap into more than 150 interactive activities that are easy to lead and feature music, puppets, stories, games, and crafts. AIP adds value to your afterschool curricula through engaging learning strategies that teach children to play with others, be a friend, express their feelings in healthy ways, empathize with others, manage their anger, cooperate in a group, and work out their differences without fighting or name-calling.

What do I get with AIP?

We’ve made AIP programming affordable, fun to learn, and easy to use. After ESR leads two days of training and meetings with your staff, you’ll be ready to start implementing AIP. Two additional site visits and participant reunion meetings will help institutionalize the program. A family fun night will connect parents with your program, and engage them and their children in activities drawn from AIP. Since every learning environment is different, we’ve made AIP afterschool programming flexible. An ESR consultant will train your afterschool staff and tailor AIP to fit your learning environment.

To maximize your programming dollars, ESR will do multi-site trainings where several afterschool programs can share the program costs and train together. We also offer a “Train the Trainers” program for multi-site afterschool programs where ESR guides your program leaders through the program and shows them how to coach their staff through the AIP activities. Whatever option you choose, you’ll have the skills and valuable tools you need to promote character education, conflict resolution, and violence prevention in your learning environment.

With AIP you’ll receive:

  • School-Age Adventures in Peacemaking—a guide with more than 150 activities that promote social and emotional development through music, games, team challenges, stories, reading, writing, arts and crafts, drama, puppet play, cooking, and more
  • The School-Age Provider Kit—the kit has all the tools you’ll need to lead AIP activities, including hard to find items such as spot markers, buddy ropes, and feelings cards
  • Parent Connections – 12 different activity sheets that help parents understand and promote AIP themes at home
