Resolving Conflict Creatively Program

What is the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP) for Elementary School?

The Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP) is a well-evaluated, K-8 program in character education and social and emotional learning. It is the nation’s largest and longest running school program with a special focus on conflict resolution and intergroup relations.

First developed as an initiative of the New York City public schools and ESR’s NYC chapter, RCCP now serves over 400 schools among 16 urban, suburban, and rural districts across the country. RCCP is characterized by a comprehensive, multi-year strategy for preventing violence and creating caring and peaceable communities of learning that improve school success for all children.

How can RCCP help my school or district?

RCCP helps children in grades K-8 develop the skills to reduce violence and prejudice, form caring relationships, and build healthy lives. An intensive study of RCCP in New York City by the National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP) at Columbia University found that children receiving substantial RCCP instruction showed more positive social and academic development. They perceived their world in a less hostile way, saw violence as an unacceptable option, and chose nonviolent ways to resolve conflict. They also performed significantly better on standardized academic achievement tests than other children.

RCCP also helps school staff to transform school and classroom cultures into safe, respectful, and caring communities through its multi-faceted approach. An evaluation in the Atlanta Public Schools by Metis Associates found that 64% of teachers reported less physical violence and 75% reported more student cooperation in their classrooms. The in-and out-of-school suspension rates at an RCCP middle school decreased significantly compared to other schools.

What do I get with RCCP?

The RCCP model provides extensive teacher training and coaching to implement curriculum-based skill instruction, classroom management, and instructional practices. Their aim is to teach children self-management, cooperation, and problem-solving skills and promote interpersonal effectiveness and intercultural understanding. RCCP helps staff to establish peer mediation programs and other school-wide initiatives that build student leadership in conflict resolution and intergroup relations. In addition, RCCP provides training for administrators, counselors, support staff, and parents so that they are able to model and reinforce what students are learning in their classrooms.

With RCCP you’ll receive:

  • A planning meeting and data collection to assess the needs of each school and customize the program to address those needs
  • A three-to-four-day introductory workshop for teachers complete with curriculum materials, followed by on-site classroom visits, coaching, and consultation with all participants
  • Peer mediation training for school coordinators, adult coaches, and students
  • Training for administrators so that they can utilize their leadership skills in promoting healthy social and emotional development, positive inter-group relations, and constructive resolution of conflict
  • Peace in the Family workshops for parents with an option to prepare parents to become workshop leaders
  • Training for paraprofessionals, bus drivers, and security staff to help them learn skills they can use in their roles to contribute to a positive school culture

We offer multiple options for schools or districts to get started with RCCP. The program can begin with one school. Another option is for multiple schools to train teams at the same time. Schools can begin with one, several, or all of the program components. In addition, RCCP can train leaders and build the capacity of schools and districts to institutionalize the program so that it becomes part of the culture of the school.
